Abstract

537,380. Sampling gases for analysis. FIFE, J. G. (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). Dec. 18, 1939, No. 32418. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sec. 91 of the Acts. June 21, 1940.] [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Groups XXIX, XXI and XXVIII] A container suitable for taking samples of gas diffusing from oil deposits comprises inner and outer gas-tight walls forming two chambers, each fitted with a charging and discharging connection and at least the inner wall being made from flexible material. Fig. 1 shows a container consisting of inner and outer envelopes 3, 5 formed of a flexible material such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Cellophane" and having their upper and lower edges clamped between a metal stem 1 and an annular metal member 2. Gas may be supplied to, or withdrawn from, the envelopes 3, 5 through valves 12, 12A secured to a metal plate 6 by plugs 10. 10A which pass through and grip the envelopes. The plate 6 may be secured by a screw 14 to a panel 15 carrying pins 9, 9A which open the valves 12, 12A to place the envelopes in communication through passages 16, 17 in the panel with gas supply and discharge pipes 20, 20A. When the gas sample is to be analysed air is pumped into the envelope 3 to force the gas out of the envelope 5. Fig. 4 shows an alternative gas container comprising a "Cellophane" tube 5 secured in a glass cylinder 3A by a brass plate 51 at the lower end and by an additional piece of "Cellophane" 5A, rubber 53, and wire 52 at the upper end. The spaces inside and around the tube 5 are provided with gas connections 54, 55 opening with a chamber consisting of a metal or glass tube 60, a rubber tube 61, and rubber end pieces 63, 64. The end piece 64 carries gas tubes 20, 20A. By twisting the tube 61 either of the tubes 54, 55 may be connected to the pipe 20A. The gas sample may be sealed in the space between the glass tube 3A and tube 5 by clamping a rubber ball 56 against the orifice of the tube 55. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the means for collecting gas from a space in a probing bore hole shown in Fig. 4 (Cancelled). Gas is first pumped from the space 41 by a pump 34 to the envelope 5, whilst a pump 33 discharges gas from the space 40 above the space 41 through a valve 31. The valve 31 is then closed and the valve 32 is then opened to allow the pump 33 to fill the envelope 3 from the envelope 5. The valve 32 is then closed and both pumps are operated to fill the envelopes to the required pressure. Means are also described for filling the gas collecting chambers by suction applied by allowing liquid to escape from a jar. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
