Abstract

997,832. Universal joints. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. March 13, 1962 [March 14, 1961], No. 9674/62. Heading F2U. A homokinetic universal joint comprises a number of half-ring shape forks 5, 6, 7, 8, slidable in end fittings 3, 4 on the shafts 1, 2, which forks rotate in planes turning about the joint centre. Each shaft has two forks slidably rotatable in the shaft end fittings 3, 4, the forks being hinged in pairs by bolts 9 to provide mutually perpendicular pairs of forks. The pivoting bolts 9 are maintained in the bisecting plane of the joint by a grooved ring 11 engaging pegs 10 on the bolts, the ring 11 being guided between flanges 15, 16 threaded on a pin 14 held in balls 19, 20 captive in the shaft end fittings. In a modification, the pegs 10 are engaged by annular flanges which also enclose a disc on the pin 14. More than two forks may be used in each shaft end fitting and they may be carried in ball or roller-bearings.
