Abstract

1,042,721. Universal joints. LOHR & BROMKAMP G.m.b.H. April 1, 1963 [March 30, 1962; April 2, 1962; March 15, 1963], No. 12899/63. Heading F2U. In a constant velocity ratio universal joint of the kind having torque transmitting balls 29 in grooves 27, 28 in outer and inner members 25, 21, relative axial movement between the inner and outer members 21, 25 is permitted. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the balls 29 are retained in a part-spherical cage 30 between a cylindrical surface 26 of the outer member 25 and a spherical surface 31 of the inner member 21 and the axes of the grooves 27, 28 are oppositely indined to a plane through the joint axes, Fig. 5 (not shown). A small gap is preferably provided between the inner member 21 and cage 30 so that during axial movement of the outer member 25 the balls 29 roll until the cage 30 abuts the inner member whereafter the outer member slides relative to the balls. Axial movement between the inner and outer members 21, 25 is limited by a ring 32. In Figs. 1 and 6 (not shown), the outer surface of the cage has a central spherical part and outer conical parts which limit the angularity of the joint. In Fig. 7, the inner surface of the outer member 42 has a central cylindrical part 41 and outer spherical parts 43 which limit the axial movement of the jiont, and the inner member 45 has two part spherical surfaces 48 which permit greater rolling of the balls during axial movement between the inner and outer members. The axes of adjacent grooves in each member may be oppositely inclined to the plane through the axis, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a double joint, Fig. 10 (not shown), the axes of the grooves are arcuate, lie in a plane through the axis and are curved about centres which are axially spaced along the axis so that the grooves open in the form of an arcuate wedge, alternate grooves opening to opposite sides of the coupling members. The Specification describes an embodiment in which the axes of the grooves are straight, lie in a plane through the axis and are inclined to the axis so that the grooves open in the form of a wedge, alternate grooves opening to opposite sides of the coupling members. The axes of the grooves may be portions of helices, the helices on the inner and outer members having opposite pitch or pitched to the same hand with different lead. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the axes of the grooves are parallel with the axes of the coupling members.
