Abstract

892,595. Universal joints. DANA CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1959, No. 30510/59. Class 80 (2). In a constant velocity ratio universal joint of the kind wherein balls 52, 54, 82 lie in intersecting grooves 28, 30, 40, 46, 74 ... 80 in the opposed faces of interengaging axial claws 20 ... 26 of shaft members 10, 12, the grooves are so shaped that the distance between diametrically opposite points of intersection of the groove axes 56, 57 are constant and two, 52, 54, of the balls are connected by a strut 70 thereby preventing axial separation of the joint. As shown the grooves have a straight part 32 and a curved part 34 so that the angle between the axes of intersecting grooves lies within the range of 30-40 degrees. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the grooves comprise two different curved parts.
