Abstract

996,005. Safes; multiple fastenings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 24, 1962 [Jan. 24, 1961; Jan. 31, 1961], Nos. 2740/61 and 3605/61. Heading E2A. A door bolt actuating mechanism for a safe, wherein the bolt 9 or each of a series of bolts mounted on the door is advanced and retracted by a lock controlled operating mechanism comprises a handle 2 or like actuating member, a toothed wheel 10 rotated by the handle and a locking means for controlling movement of the handle, each bolt 9 being connected to the toothed wheel by a pinion 18 and a transmission shaft 17. Each bolt 9 is housed in a bore 14 of a supporting block 13 and has a screw-threaded portion 11 rotatable in portion 12 of the block 13. In operation, rotation of the handle 2 causes bolts 9, through means 10, 17 and 18, to be screwed through their supports 13 and into engagement with the frame. Simultaneously, a locking bar 1 is moved through rack and pinion means 4, 15 into a position where the bolt 6 of a lock 7 may engage a recess 8 of the locking bar, to lock the mechanism. In a modification, the bolts may consist of one or more spring- biased bars extending longitudinally along the edges of the doors, and movable through the edges of the doors by cam or ratchet means. The locking bar may be replaced by a rotatable plate provided with a notch. The bolts may be of the sliding type coupled to the transmission shaft by a rack and pinion means. The transmission shaft may be flexible or rigid.
