Abstract

[Also in Divisions B7 and H2] A motor vehicle includes a gearbox having an input shaft 17 which is driven by an internal combustion engine 2 through a clutch 6 and by an electric dynamotor 22 through reduction gearing 21 incorporating a free-wheel. The input shaft 17 drives change speed gearing 8 having an output shaft 20 connected to the driven wheels 12, 13, of the vehicle through a differential 9. A switch 25 is closed when the accelerator pedal 24 is depressed and, providing an isolating switch 27 is closed, the dynamotor is energized from a battery 23 to start the engine 2. When the engine 2 has reached a predetermined speed the free wheel permits the dynamotor to idle until a further increase in engine speed causes the ratio of the reduction gearing 21 to be changed automatically to increase the speed of the dynamotor which then charges the battery 23 through a voltage regulator (not shown). The dynamotor 22 may be used to propel the vehicle, in which case the clutch 6 is held out of engagement by a locking bar 41 which engages the clutch pedal 7. An hydraulic pump 40 coupled to the input shaft 17 can be driven by either the engine 2 or the dynamotor 22 to lock the door latches when the vehicle is moving or operate a windscreen wiper or hydraulic jack.
