Abstract

989,047. Rolling. T. SENDZIMIR. June 4, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 22123/63. Heading B3M. A rigid single block mill housing 1 contains a cylindrical bore in which is housed a removable cartridge which supports the mill rolls. The cartridge includes two cradles 2 and 2<SP>1</SP> which are urged apart against the walls of the bore by jacks 50 and are located by pins 51. The cradles each support secondary intermediate backing rolls 11 and 11<SP>1</SP> on shaped portions 7<SP>1</SP>, and shafts 82 and 82<SP>1</SP> of supporting castors 12 and 12<SP>1</SP> in aligned apertures 7. The primary intermediate backing rolls 10 and 10<SP>1</SP> are carried in drawers 24 and 24<SP>1</SP> which axially retain the rolls at their ends, and are slidably mounted in the cradles 2 and 2<SP>1</SP>. The drawers have screwed spindles 26 and 26<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, which allow axial adjustment of the drawers and rolls by rotation of internally screwed sleeves 28 and 28<SP>1</SP>. The work rolls 9 and 9<SP>1</SP> are supported by the rolls 10 and 10<SP>1</SP> and by thrust bearings 32 and 34. To remove the work rolls a tubular bracket 33 housing the bearing 32 is removed to allow operation of a plunger 35 to axially shift the rolls so that they can be slid out by hand. The whole cartridge can be shifted by a hydraulic actuator 21 on to a rail mounted carriage 23. The cartridge and bore may be tapered and fluid may be introduced into passages 15 to help free the cartridge from the bore, the jacks 50 first having been released. Screwdown control is effected by rotating one or more of the eccentrically mounted castor carrying shafts 82. For example the upper two shafts can be rotated using a system in which fixed and movable vanes are supplied with hydraulic fluid at varying pressures. The contour of the work rolls, and hence the workpiece, is adjustable by means of eccentric collars 7, Fig. 9, situated along the length of shafts 82. The collars are rotated by means of a screwoperated rack 72, the driving-shaft 76 of which is supplied with magnetic clutches along its length so that appropriate coupling of the clutches varies the contour of the rolls 11 supported by the collars, and hence of the work rolls. The cartridge may be modified to accept a two-high roll arrangement. Coolant is supplied to the work and work rolls by nozzles connected to bores in the drawers, the fluid being drained from the cradle 2<SP>1</SP> through apertures 38.
