Abstract
650,469. Milling ; making rolling-mill rolls ; steady rests. INLAND STEEL CO. Feb. 10, 1948, No. 3880. Convention date, July 25, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] A machine comprises means for synchronously rotating a cutting tool 80 and a rolling mill roll 55, without simultaneous axial displacement of the roll, to produce at least one circumferential groove around the roll, the tool being substantially tangential to the roll and being sufficiently long to provide a multiplicity of non-overlapping cutting zones, only one of which is brought into cutting action for a particular grooving operation. The roll 55 is rotated from the main spindle 28 through gearing 30, 31, 35, 44 and 52 on the headstock 53, the gears 35-44 being supported by a link 57 which permits vertical, axial and transverse adjustment of the roll. The tool 80 is driven direct from the spindle 28, being supported by an outboard bearing 27. Cutting thrust on the tool is taken up by blocks 75 engaging bearing surfaces 70 on the tool, the blocks being vertically-adjustable on a support 77 by screws 78. The cutting-faces 100 (Fig. 7) of the tool are radial to facilitate re-sharpening. Fresh cutting-teeth on the tool 80 are brought into use by transverse movement of the tab carrying the roll. The rolls produced are of the type described in Specification 646,801. Specification 649,542, [Group X], also is referred to.
