A cluster rolling mill includes a pair of work rolls each backed by a set of intermediate rolls which in turn are each supported by a composite backing roll, the backing rolls including a central journal 50 which hydrostatically supports sleeves 58. Lubricant for each sleeve is supplied through conduits 53 and 54 and is either returned by conduits 56, in which case seals 57 are employed, or is allowed to escape laterally from the sleeves. The sleeves 58 may be substituted by a single sleeve supported by a journal supported at its ends, or the sleeves may be provided with separate coaxial supporting journals each with a separate lubricant supply.
