986,844. Electrophotographic development. RANK-XEROX Ltd. April 14,1961 [April 15, 1960], No. 13464/61. Heading G2H. The electrostatic image on a rotatable xerographic cylindrical member is developed by cascading granular developer over the outer surface so that the developer is directed to the surface tangentially with a speed greater than that of the cylinder at the point of contact, and allowing the developer to fall away from the cylinder at a point lower than the point of contact. Preferably the point of contact is at a position below the highest point of the cylinder and the speed of the developer stream is sufficient to maintain a speed exceeding that of the cylinder whilst passing over the highest point. As shown an image of a continuously moving film 13 is projected on to the charged photoconductive surface of the continuously rotating drum 10 and the electrostatic charge image so produced is made visible by the developer (toner and carrier) applied by the shoot 25 fed by the hopper conveyer 23. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2 not shown) a horizontally moving conveyer fed by a hopper propels developer over a deflecting guide plate whence it is applied tangentially to the cylinder. As a further modification the Specification suggests applying the developer tangentially with the help of air jets. A rotating brush 20 removes residual developer from drum 10 before re-use.
