Abstract

1, 009, 866. Electrophotographic processes. RANK-XEROX Ltd. May 1, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 14769/62. Heading G2H. An electrostatic latent image, on a xerographic plate 12 in the form of an endless band, is developed by directing, granular toner along an inclined portion of the belt with a velocity that remains substantially constant throughout its travel along that portion. The inclination of the belt is adjustable so to be slightly greater than the angle (angle of repose) to which the plate can be inclined before the developer used starts to flow down the belt under the influence of gravity. Examples are given of the angle of repose for toned and untoned beads with various carriers. The plate 12 comprises a band of conductive material 8, e.g., aluminium, brass or steel or a metallized plastic web such as polyethylene terephthalate, the web having a coating 7 of photo-conductive insulating material. The endless band is driven by a motor 13 under the control of a timer 9, such that the lower run of the band is fed into the position previously occupied by the upper run. A full frame corona discharge device 14 comprising a grid of fine wires uniformly charges the adjacent area of layer 7. An image of an original, such as a book 18, is projected by mirrors 21, 23 and lens 22 through the grid after charging. A hopper 28 has a gate 30 which controls the supply of toner to a shoot 31 having curved section 32. A conveyer 34 returns toner from hopper 33 to hopper 28. The developed electrostatic image on the layer 7 is transferred to a web 25 of paper by a corona discharge device 26. A brush 27 removes residual toner before recharging the layer 7. Specification 1,009,867 is referred to.
