Abstract

An alloy having good machinability and resistance to stress corrosion 1-2.5% Mg2Si with a permissible excess of Mg or Si so that the Si is 45-65% of the Mg content; Bi 0.4-0.75% ; Pb 0.4-0.75% ; Al the remainder. The alloy may also contain: Cu 0.1-0.5% ; Mn 0.1-0.5% ; Cr 0.02-0.3% ; Ti 0.01-0.25% and may be solution treated at 920-1075 DEG F. and precipitation hardened at 275-450 DEG F. for 1-24 hours. Cold working may be effected before or after the precipitation hardening step.
