Abstract

983,401. Oil burners. GULF OIL (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. March 7, 1961 [April 29, 1960], No. 8241/61. Heading F4T. Air is swirled around a duct 61 disposed in a swirl chamber 40 and connected by a bore 28 to a source of liquid fuel at a lower level, the swirling air aspirating the fuel through the open end of the duct 61 and forming therewith a mixture of fuel and air. The swirl chamber is formed by the forward end of a conical bore 60 in a plate 18 urged against an end closure 14 of a nozzle tube 12 by a frusto-conical stem 34 on a plug 26 screwed into the tube 12. Air is supplied through a bore 50 in the plug 26 and through slots 36 in the stem 34 and enters the swirl chamber tangentially. The fuel/air mixture passes into a second duct 62 extending into a further swirl chamber 58 fed with air through tangential borings 24 in the rim 22 of the plate 18. A new mixture of fuel and air is thus formed and passes through an orifice 16 in the end closure 14 into the furnace. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) a separate air supply is provided for the second swirl chamber. In a third embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the end closure of the nozzle tube is formed integrally therewith and has a conical bore in the base of which a conical stem is located. The stem has slots for conveying air to the forward part of the bore. The first swirl chamber is defined by a conical bore in the conical stem.
