Abstract
1,244,165. Blowpipe burners. WILLIAM ALLDAY & CO. Ltd. 27 Nov., 1968 [2 Dec., 1967], No. 54941/67. Heading F4T. In a blowpipe head, particularly for natural gas, having a burner tube 12 threaded in a body 11, pressurized air passes through a nozzle 15 in a chamber 13 in body 11 and into a Venturi tube 17 secured in tube 12, thereby entraining fuel gas, supplied to chamber 13 by a duct 16, through a converging annular gap between the complementary frusto-conical surfaces of the nozzle tip 22 and a mouth portion 18 of Venturi tube 17. The gas and air then pass through a cylindrical portion 21 of Venturi 17, with a diameter larger than that of the orifice of nozzle 15 but forming a passage of reduced diameter connecting chamber 13 to the main bore of tube 12, and through an internal baffle 28 in tube 12. The baffle 28 has a central coaxial bore 30 and three outer helical passages 31, defined by the flanks of a very coarse three-start V-section thread in baffle 28 and by the wall of tube 12, give the gas a swirling motion. The nozzle 15 is threaded in a bore 23 of diameter less than that of chamber 13 and which is supplied with compressed air from a duct 24 via a needle valve 25. Different sizes of the combined burner tube 12 and Venturi 17 may be screwed into the common body 11 for different applications.
