Abstract

1,175,791. Gas burners. ECLIPSE FUEL ENG. CO. 2 May, 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 20773/68. Heading F4T. A gas burner comprises an inner gas delivery pipe 10 flow thereto being regulated by a valve 14 in a gas supply pipe 11, the pipe 10 extending through the closed bottom end 21 and terminating beyond the open end 26 of a cup 22 which is disposed within and is concentric with a tube 12 to which air is delivered via a conduit 17 into an opening 18 so as to be formed into a tubular curtain around the cup 22, a stream of gas being discharged from the downstream end 35 of the pipe 10 whilst some of the gas flows out of the pipe 10 through holes 27 and mixes with air entering the cup through holes 28 and 29, in the bottom and side of the cup respectively, to provide a continuous pilot flame, partial combustion of the remaining gas occurring within the tube 12 beyond the cup 22 and being completed at a nozzle 13, formed by convergence of the walls 42, 45 of a tube 41 composed of ceramic material and clamped to the tube 12 beyond the open end of the cup 22. The angle of convergence of wall 45 decreases from a maximum adjacent wall 42 such as to maintain a layer of air covering the wall 45 to the discharge opening of the nozzle 13, the cross-sectional area of which opening is about one-third that of tube 41 within wall 42. In operation, the pilot flame is lit first using gas supplied through a pipe 32 having a valve 33, valve 14 being closed. Ignition is accomplished by a spark plug 31, after which valve 14 is opened. A flame detector is present in the zone of ignition and ignition is observed through a peep opening.
