Abstract
982,415. Cooling gases; heating feedwater. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36432/62. Headings F4A and F4K. In a heat-exchanger, a gas or vapour is brought into direct contact with a liquid by the liquid being injected into the gas or vapour through a plurality of apertures, and the injected liquid is directed against deflector plates to form thin films of liquid in planes which are spaced from one another, the liquid being injected on to the deflector plates in a direction such that the main direction of the flow in the films is vertically downwards. Feedwater enters a direct contact boiler feedwater heater by a pipe 2. Projecting from this pipe are a series of branch pipes 3 which in turn have apertures from which the feed water is injected into the casing. A deflector plate 5 is disposed opposite each aperture, the plates as a whole are formed in planes at various distances from the branch pipe, the water being directed against one of these plates preferably at an angle of 30 degrees to the same from which it falls as a thin film, such that no two films interfere. Steam enters the heater by inlet 6 and is dispersed by a baffle plate 7 before mixing with the water. Condensed steam and water, after passing through a baffle 9 are collected in space 8 before being conducted from the heater by outlet 10. Unabsorbed vapour or gas may be removed by vent pipe 11.
