1296344 Water boilers REDFYRE Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 Jan 1970] 3682/70 Heading F4A A heat exchanger comprises a passage 1 of zig-zag shape and rectangular cross-section for a first fluid, and outer chambers 7, 8 for a second fluid, the passage and chambers being closed by end plates at least one of which is removable to permit inspection and cleaning of the passage. In a water boiler, water chambers 7, 8 are interconnected by tubes 16, 17 and have inlet and outlet connections 18, 19. The passage 1 leads from a combustion chamber 6 fitted with a gas burner, and exhausts through a slot (15), Fig. 2 (not shown), in top plate 11. This passage extends through the full length of the boiler and has removable cast iron end plates (4a) (5a). Fins, knobs or pips may be provided on the interior or exterior surfaces of the passage walls 2, 3 and internal fins may form baffles to increase the flow path of the combustion gases. One of the walls of the passage 1 may be of refractory material. The passage walls 2, 3 may be made of sheet metal such as copper and other parts of the heat exchanger may be made of reinforced plastics material. An outer casing 9 is made of sheet metal. Alternatively the heat exchanger may be made of cast iron. A pocket (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), is provided for a thermostat. The heat exchanger may be used for heat transfer between two liquids, two gases or vapours or between a liquid and gas or vapour.
