Abstract

826,054. Tubular heat exchangers; heating steam boilers by waste gases. RHEINSTAHL NORDSEEWERKE G.m.b.H., [formerly NORDSEEWERKE EMDEN G.m.b.H.]. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1956], No. 4476/57. Classes 64(3) and 123(2) [Also in Group XXVII] In a device in which the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine are used in a heat exchanger to provide hot water or steam, and which also acts as an exhaust gas silencer, heat exchange tubes 3 are located in an annular exhaust gas passage 11 formed between an outer casing and a hollow displacer 16 closed at its. ends is disposed within the casing, the displacer having apertures in its side wall whereby the interior of the displacement body functions as a resonator chamber. In the form shown, the space within the displacer 16 is divided into two chambers 4, 10 communicating with the annular passage 11 through apertures 6, 20 in the displacer wall. The chambers 4, 10 are preferably tuned to different frequencies by suitably dimensioning the apertures 6, 20. Additional resonance chambers may be provided if desired. The heat exchange tubes 3 may extend parallel to one another (Fig. 2), or helically (Fig. 3) between the headers 1, 2.
