A stop valve body 1 of glass which has a lateral part la is provided with a glass pipe 3 clamped thereto by bolts 5 and elements 4 with interposed packing 6; an annulus 7 of P.T.F.E. is retained between the body 1 and pipe 3 by the bolts 5. A seating 2 in the pipe 3 coacts with a movable closure member 8, which is inflatable and formed by moulding resilient material, e.g. rubber; the member 8 is hemi-spherical and has a neck 9 the thickness of the wall of the member decreasing uniformly from the neck. Within the body 1 is a hollow rod 11 clamped to the neck 9 by a sleeve 12, the rod extending into a mounting comprising an annular plate 18 clamped to the body 1 in a similar way to the pipe 3. The plate 18 has a boss 19 with a bore 20 in which is keyed a collar 21 on the rod 11, the collar having a screwthreaded extension 26 engaged by a sleeve 24 supported by the boss 19 and retained by the clamping means associated with the plate 18; a hand wheel 27 is secured to the sleeve 24. The rod 11 terminates in a valve 29. The parts within the body 1 are coated with a material, e.g. P.T.F.E., resistant to chemical attack, the coating 31 being arranged partly in the form of bellows 33 sealed by a rubber annulus 35 constituting part of the plate clamping means. The valve is operated by supplying fluid, e.g. compressed air, through the auxiliary valve 29 to inflate the member 8 which then contacts and makes taut the coating 31; the member 8 may then be moved axially by rotation of the wheel 27. Control of fluid through the seat 2 may also be effected by varying the inflation of the member 8 alone or in conjunction with mechanical movement thereof. The inflating fluid is controlled by a three-way cock or a distributer with an atmospheric connection. The member 8 may be remotely actuated by an electrical or mechanical device acting on the hand wheel 27 or directly on the rod 11.
