Abstract
907,476. Valves. COCKBURNS Ltd. Sept. 6, 1960 [June 6, 1959], No. 19412/59. Class 135. In a butterfly valve of the kind in which the plane of the butterfly makes an acute angle with the axis of a shaft on which it is mounted, and in which sealing between the butterfly and its seating is effected by an inflatable sealing member, an operating means for the valve is arranged automatically to inflate and deflate the sealing member as the butterfly is moved towards or away from the closed position. The shaft 3 of the butterfly 1 is operated through a bell-crank 7 movable between stops 8, 26 by an operating rod 5 which has a spring connection 10 with the bell-crank. After the bell-crank 7 has moved against stop 8 to close the valve, further movement, of rod 5, enables an extension of this rod to move a lever 14, one end 16 of which acts through a spring 24 on a rod 17 carried by a diaphragm 18. A fluid chamber 21 enclosed by this diaphragm has an opening 22 connected to conduits 23 on the valve body 2 which communicate with an inflatable sealing ring 4 carried in the bore of the body and cooperating with the butterfly 1 so that this movement of the diaphragm inflates the ring 4. Conversely, on opening the valve, the inflating pressure is relieved. The sealing ring 4 may be corrugated and may be of rubber or a metal such as stainless steel.
