Abstract
Apparatus for coating the inside of heated hollow body 11 with a powdered or particulate fusible coating substance comprises a container 1 having a valve controlled outlet adapted to be connected to the interior of the body, means for agitating the substance in the container and valve means adapted to be connected to a source of vacuum 20 and to the interior of the body, the valve controlled outlet including a valve seat 4 against which is biased a closure member 29 carried by a piston rod 30 extending through a floating piston 31 and having a collar 35, first spring means 36 acting between the collar and one side of the floating piston and a second weaker spring means acting between the collar and the cylinder 33 in which the piston floats, in a direction to close said outlet, and conduit means 55 for directing fluid under pressure to the other side of the piston for opening the valve against its bias to permit said substance to enter the interior of the body. In use pipe 11 which has been pre-heated to a temperature of 300-350 DEG C is clamped in position on container 1 and its upper end is connected by hose 17 to vacuum vessel 20, the powder supply via valve 6 being then closed. The valve 18 is opened so that pipe 11 is evacuated and air is supplied through porous plate 24 to fluidise the coating powder in container 1. Valve 18 is then closed and pressurised air from vessel 47 is fed via valve 39 to above the floating piston 31. The piston slides along the rod 30 to tension spring 36 and when the tension in this spring exceeds the sum of the tension of the return spring 37 and the pressure on disc 29 the latter is suddenly opened so that the powder may enter into the pipe 11. Subsequently valve 39 is closed and valve 41 opened so that the compressed air in the space above piston 31 is discharged to atmosphere and disc 29 returned to its seating. The cycle may be repeated to increase the coating thickness. The valves are preferably remote controlled and sequentially operated by means of a control switch 45 driven by motor 46. The coating substance may be electrostatically charged to aid the coating operation and excess coating substance from pipe 11 may be returned direct to the container 1 by providing a connection between the container 1 and the vacuum vessel 20.
