A spanner comprising a fixed jaw 2 projecting at right angles to a handle 1 and a similarly projecting movable jaw 4 slidably mounted on the handle 1 and adjustable thereon by means of a second handle 8 pivoted to the movable jaw and having an abutment mounted on or connected thereto and engageable with a series of selectable abutments or an adjustable abutment on the handle part 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the handle part 8 is of U-section and embraces the handle 1 at one face and the side edges thereof. A flat strut 12, pivoted at 13 to the handle 8, has at its free end an abutment tooth 14 which is selectively engageable with any one of a series of abutment notches in the edge of the handle 1. The tooth 14 is urged into a selected notch 15 by a leaf spring 16 which also urges the handles apart. In a modification, Fig. 2, the part 1 is fixed or integral with a screw threaded portion 20 in an internally screw threaded handle 21. In place of the strut 12 a link 23 is pivoted at 24 to the free end of the handle 8 and at 25 to a collar 27 mounted in an annular groove 28 in the tubular handle 21. The link is arranged so that it can pass beyond dead centre position when the handles are brought together.
