969,501. Combustion chambers. R. E. GEORGES. Jan. 19,1961, No. 2270/61. Heading FIB. The flow cross-section between an auxiliary combustion chamber B and the cylinder is controlled by a plunger 7 sliding freely in a prechamber space 6. The plunger 7 in its outer and inner positions seats on seats 10, 11 respectively and its position may be adjusted manually or automatically in dependence upon engine speed by a cam 15 or cyclically by an engine driven cam which moves the plunger to its inner position near top dead centre on the compression stroke. Compressed air may be injected into the chamber 6 through a valve 17 during the expansion stroke. In a modification, Fig. 3, the plunger 7 has a waist 7a and the injector 5 is mounted in a slidable member 21 which is adjustable by means 20. The member 21 has a flared end surrounded by a cavity 22 connected to the combustion space through a gap 23, compressed air from the cavity flowing through bores 24 to scavenge the space in front of the injector. The cylinder head, which may be of light alloy, and combustion chamber may be lined by linings 3a of refractory metal or austenitic steel and the passage 4 may be formed in a member 25, of the same material, which is adjustable to vary the direction of flow of the gases into the combustion chamber.
