Abstract

1325453 Four-stroke I C engines TREADWELL CORP 25 July 1970 [25 July 1969 24 June 1970] 31943/70 Heading F1B Air is supplied to an engine cylinder through an inlet valve 6 in a cooled and compressed condition and is further compressed on the compression stroke of the piston 2. The compressed air is delivered through the exhaust valve 9 after piston compression to a recuperator 12 or recuperators 12 and 27 in which it is heated. The heated compressed air is supplied to the cylinder through an inlet valve 7 and fuel is sprayed by an injector 10 for the period during which the valve 7 is open to provide substantially constant pressure combustion or as the valve 7 is closing or immediately after closure to provide constant volume combustion. The exhaust gases are discharged through the exhaust valve 8 to the recuperator or recuperators 12 and 27 and a turbine 11 which may drive the supercharging compressor 22. The supercharging may be effected in a multi-stage compressor with cooling to ambient temperature between the stages. Examples of the timing of the operation of the valves 6 to 9 and the temperatures and pressures occurring at stages in the cycle of operations of the engine are given in the specification. In Figs.4 to 9 (not shown), temperature-entropy diagrams of cycles in accordance with the invention and standard diesel cycles are illustrated.
