Abstract

1379692 External combustion engines G VAN AVERMAETE 23 March 1972 [7 April 1971 3 March 1972] 13633/72 Heading F1S An external-combustion engine has at least two cylinders 2, 3-associated with a combustion chamber 4 and compressed air pressurized in one cylinder 2 is delivered at constant pressure into the combustion chamber, is subjected to an increase of pressure and is expanded in the other cylinder 3 together with combustion products. An inlet valve 1 has the seat 5 thereof arranged so that the valve opens towards the outside of the cylinder and the inlet valve have a direct control device. A control system is provided for an exhaust valve 12 of the other cylinder which system is so adjusted that the exhaust valve shall be closed before the piston 13 of the other cylinder reaches its upper dead centre. Cobustion products remain inside the other cylinder and are pressurized by the piston 13 to balance the pressure on the face of the inlet valve that is biased by the combustion products from the combustion chamber. A device for cooling the inlet valve 1 comprises a compressed air feed pipe 14 which opens into a stationary skirt around the inlet valve head.
