In valve gear having inlet and outlet valves arranged coaxially, a pair of levers 4, 5, Fig. 1, are carried by a common lever shaft 3, one lever arm part 4a actuating the inner valve V1 directly and the other lever arm part 5a actuating the outer valve V2 by way of intermediate means 6 and at least one arm part extends substantially in a plane which is inclined to the lever shaft axis. Arm part 4a passes through a hole 6a in the intermediate piece 6 which is freely rotatable in a connecting piece 7 secured to the valve stem by a nut 8. The connecting piece forms an abutment for an exhaust valve spring R1 and a yoke 9, keyed to the inlet valve stem, has arms, passing through slots 6c in the intermediate piece, which form spring abutments for the exhaust valve springs R2. In another embodiment, a helical coil spring closes the exhaust valve through a spring abutment yoke having four arms passing through slots in the intermediate piece. In a further embodiment, the arm part 5<SP>1</SP>a, Fig. 6, is formed with two cam-shaped engaging surfaces 5<SP>1</SP>b. In a modification, the intermediate piece is formed as a deep cup with slots for the inner valve arm part and spring abutment yoke arms, and the engaging surface of the outer valve arm part overlies that of the inner valve arm part. The valve clearance may be adjusted by means of disc-headed screws 16, Fig. 9, and the lever arms 14, 15 are made of the same casting, pressing or forging.
