Abstract

960,832. Cartons. UNILEVER Ltd. Jan. 6, 1961 [Jan. 8, 1960; July 4, 1960], No. 720/61. Heading B8P. A carton blank of cardboard covered on the inside with a layer of thermoplastic material has end flaps 6-10 defined by cuts which only partly penetrate the cardboard so that the thermoplastic layer remains intact when the flaps are folded in but peels off from part of the flaps. The blank also has slits 11 or cut-outs 12 to limit the area of peeling. In forming the carton, walls 1, 5 are first glued together to form a tube; the end flaps 6, 8 are folded in and heat seals are formed between the peeled off portions of the thermoplastic layer; and finally the flaps 13, 14 are folded in and glued to flaps 6, 8. In a modification (Figs. 5-8, not shown) the thermoplastic layer is stripped completely from the three flaps 7, 8, 9 and heat sealed to layer on the flap 6, the latter then being folded in and flaps 7, 8, 9 being glued to it. The outer surface of the carton may also be covered with thermoplastic.
