Abstract
958,801. Valves. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 20, 1961], No. 2486/61. Heading F2V. A leak valve comprises a base-plate 1, a tube 3 for flow of gas, the tube having a thin-walled portion 4 of fine bore supported by the plate, and a thrust member 5 mounted from the plate for controlled compression of the thin-walled portion within the elastic limit of the tube to vary the cross-sectional area of the bore. The tube 3 may be of nickel having a portion 4 of 0.1 inch outside diameter with a wall thickness of one to two thousandths of an inch, the flow rate being variable between zero and 0.01 uL/sec. with a pressure drop of 50 mm. of mercury. Axial adjustment of the member 5 is obtained by a screw-threaded connection to a worm drive 13, 18. The valve may be used to regulate the admission of gaseous samples to a mass spectrometer ion source.
