941,338. Mixing inhalant gases. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. June 29, 1962 [July 5, 1961], No. 24326/61. Heading A5T. [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for compounding gas mixtures comprises a mixing chamber 1 to which the gases are supplied in a pro-selected ratio by metering orifices 4 (which may be adjustable) and a pressure-equalizing means including a chamber 5 divided by a flexible diaphragm 6, and gas inlets 7 having valves 8, 9, the valve members 9 being coupled to the flexible diaphragm; the distance between the valve members or the valve seats being variable in response to the mixed gas pressure so as to vary the degree of opening of the valves in a manner to keep the mixed gas pressure constant irrespective of demand rate. As shown, the mixed gas pressure acts on the piston 12 to vary the distance between the valve members 9 by means of the differential device 11, which may be a mechanical lever, gear and screw device or an hydraulic device. In another embodiment, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the valve members are rigidly coupled together and the piston acts directly to vary the position of one of the valve seats, a differential device not being necessary. The apparatus may be used for anaesthetic gases, the outlet 2 being connected to a face mask, or for combustible gases.
