Abstract
1428392 Spray carburetters BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 14 June 1973 [24 June 1972] 29712/72 Heading FIB A variable choke or constant depression carburetter has its fuel metering head varied in response to air density change arising from barometric pressure change by the application of a sub-ambient pressure to float chamber 21, the pressure in which is controlled by a depression control valve means 26 disposed between a source of sub-ambient pressure 17 and the float chamber, the valve means including a hermetically sealed capsule 42, responsive to barometric pressure, which applies a load via resilient means 44 to a diaphragm 27 defining a chamber 29 coupled by a fluid column 25 to the float chamber. A reduction in ambient pressure causes capsule 42 to expand, which tends to open valve 32 and communicate the float chamber to the constant depression region 17 via tubes 25, 34 reducing the pressure in the float chamber. Valve 36 opens simultaneously with valve 32 to allow air to flow via tubes 30, 39 to mix with the fuel vapour drawn from the float chamber, the circumferences of the valves being chosen in a ratio to give the requisite mixture strength. A valve assembly (not shown) is interposed in line 34 to seal off the constant depression region when the depression therein exceeds that at maximum rated air-flow. This valve assembly comprises a chamber closed by a spring-loaded diaphragm open to atmospheric pressure on one side and to the constant depression region depression on the other. The capsule may contain gas, e.g. nitrogen, so that compensation for density changes arising from both pressure and temperature changes can be made.
