Abstract
An aqueous electrolyte for electro-machining metals contains an alkali metal salt of orthophosphoric or boric acid, and also dissolving anions, e.g. an alkali metal salt of a strong mineral acid, applied as a film to a gap less than 1 mm between the workpiece as <PICT:0958401/C3/1> anode and the cathode. The boric and/or phosphoric acid acts as buffer suppressing OH ion formation. In examples (1) sodium nitrite, borax, and mono sodium phosphate, (2) sodium nitrate and chloride, and disodium phosphate as dilute solutions are used. Other strong mineral acid salts include sulphate, chromate, and the oxy-chlorine acids. The electrolyte is pumped from a tank 13 through a nozzle 15, in the gap of less than 1 mm. between rotating disc cathode 10 and workpiece 6 mounted on a support 4 clamped to a table which may be moved forward by handle 5. The used electrolyte collects in a groove 16 leading to the tank 13.
