<tb> optimum;

Liquid intended for the machining of metallic materials by electrolytic means In the machining of metals by electrolytic means, anodic dissolution of the workpiece is carried out by interposing an electrolyte film between a tool electrode constituting the cathode and the workpiece constituting the anode, by passing between these two electrodes a current of high density which can reach, for example, several hundred amperes per cm 2. The distance separating the electrodes is between a few microns and a few tenths of a millimeter.
The electrolyte film is in relative movement with respect to the workpiece and its average speed can reach several tens of meters per second. In some cases, particularly for sharpening and electrolytic grinding, the tool electrode is driven in a rapid relative movement with respect to the workpiece, often at a speed of several meters per second, resulting in the electrolyte film. In other cases, the electrolyte is injected under pressure between the two electrodes which, in this case, may be stationary (static electrolytic machining).
The electrolytes used until now for electrolytic machining have various drawbacks which have slowed down the spread of this process. First, they quickly become corrosive and damage metal parts of machines exposed to machining fluid.
Various salts have been used to make up the electrolyte, but during machining, free OH-ions are often formed at the cathode which alter the composition and machining properties of the electrolyte. Finally, the anodic dissolution is essentially carried out by the action of OH- ions. As a result, the initial composition of the solution had little influence on the properties of the electrolyte after a certain machining time and that anodic dissolution by means of anions other than the OH \ radical. could play a major role, even if these anions were mostly in the liquid before machining.
Now, the anodic dissolution by the action of OH- ions makes precise machining difficult, in several applications, because anodic dissolution can take place on parts of the part which are relatively far from the electrode-tool.
Finally, the known liquids used were, or become, quickly very corrosive.
In summary, the known electrolytes have all the following drawbacks, to varying degrees
EMI0001.0026
a) <SEP> They <SEP> are <SEP> corrosive <SEP>;
<tb> b) <SEP> they <SEP> often <SEP> <SEP> difficult <SEP> precise <SEP> <SEP> machining <SEP>;
<tb> c) <SEP> their <SEP> composition <SEP> varies <SEP> during <SEP> during <SEP> of <SEP> machining, <SEP> this
<tb> which <SEP> causes <SEP> of <SEP> modifications <SEP> of <SEP> their <SEP> properties
<tb> machining, <SEP> such <SEP> that <SEP> speed <SEP> of removal <SEP> of <SEP> the
<tb> material <SEP> and <SEP> state <SEP> of <SEP> the <SEP> surface. <SEP> These <SEP> properties <SEP> do not
<tb> can <SEP> so <SEP> not <SEP> be <SEP> held <SEP> to <SEP> their <SEP> value
<tb> optimum;
<tb> d) <SEP> the <SEP> electrolytes <SEP> reach, <SEP> during <SEP> during <SEP> of <SEP> machining,
<tb> a high <SEP> pH <SEP>, <SEP> this <SEP> which <SEP> the <SEP> makes <SEP> dangerous <SEP> for
<tb> operator. The present invention relates to a liquid intended for the machining of metallic materials by electrolytic means which overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks. This liquid is characterized in that it is constituted by an aqueous saline solution comprising at least one alkali salt, orthophosphoric acid and / or boric acid.
The presence of at least one of the salts of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) or of boric acid (H3BO3) in the solution makes it possible to buffer the electrolyte, that is to say to stabilize it in the vicinity of a pH determined by preventing the abundant formation of free OH-ions, thus making it possible to profitably utilize the anode dissolving action of various anions.
These can be chosen, depending on the metal composition of the workpiece, from the following anions: N02-, N03-, Cl-, C10-, C103 ---, S04--, C104-, P04___ CO3- -, HCO3COO-, SiO3--, B03 -, Cr2O3-, Cr3O4. These anions are preferably introduced into the solution in the form of alkali salts. The alkali salts of orthophosphoric acid are, for example, NaH2PO4 (monosodium phosphate), Na2HPO4 (disodium phosphate) or Na3PO4 (trisodium phosphate).
The salts of boric acid are, for example, sodium metaborate NaBO2 or sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7, a hydrated crystallized form of which is borax. In both cases, Na could be replaced by K.
The liquid according to the invention may contain a mixture of several of these salts in a proportion determined in particular by the pH at which it is desired to carry out the machining. The liquid may optionally also contain a mixture of one or more of these salts with orthophosphoric acid and / or with boric acid.
The liquid can be obtained by dissolving the above salts in water or produced in the solution by neutralizing the phosphoric and / or boric acids with an alkaline base. Conversely, an acid could be added to the solution to modify the composition of the mixture of the above salts.
By way of non-limiting example, the following machining liquid, absolutely non-corrosive, made it possible to machine parts made of tungsten carbide (W) at speeds of 600 to 900 mm3 / min for a surface of electrodes of 1 cm2 at 200 to 300 A / cm2 and with a surface finish of between 5 and 25 microinches RMS. The liquid is obtained by mixing borax, monosodium phosphate and sodium nitrite.
The concentration of these three constituents is not critical and was, in the example chosen,
EMI0002.0021
borax <SEP> <B> ......... </B> <SEP>. <B> .................... </ B > <SEP>. <B> .... </B> <SEP> __... <SEP> 0.03 <SEP> mole / liter
<tb> <SEP> monosodium phosphate <SEP> 0.03 <SEP> mole / liter
<tb> <SEP> soda <SEP> nitrite <SEP> <B> ... <SEP> ....... </B> <SEP> .. <SEP> 0.50 <SEP> mole / liter The pH is then maintained throughout the machining at a value between 8.5 and 10.
As a result, the OH- ion concentration is absolutely negligible compared to that of the NO.- anions which effectively ensure the anodic dissolution of the metal binder (for example cobalt) of the carbide part of W. A pH greater than 10 indicates that the machining fluid must be changed.
We can give the following example of an electro lyte suitable for machining steels

<tb> sodium <SEP> chloride <SEP> <SEP> ........... <SEP> ... <SEP> 0.20 <SEP> mole / liter This electrolyte makes it possible to obtain good results, the pH being maintained between 8.5 and 10. In this case, the active anions are N03- and Cl-.
