Abstract

954,245. Reels. J. HILL. Oct. 5, 1962 [July 8, 1961], No. 24798/61. Heading B8M. On a drum or reel having two or more barrels similarly located between side or end flanges, an electric cable or wire rope is wound in the annulus between two barrels with terminal ends or sockets respectively located and fastened externally of the inner or innermost, and of the outer, barrels. The drum shown comprises barrels 10, 11, 12, mounted between flanges 13 each comprising an annulus 14 connected to a plate 15 mounted on a shaft 16 by spokes 17 attached to a collar 18. A terminal end of a cable 22 is secured to barrel 10 and the cable is guided by a ramp 25 through an opening 19 into the annulus between barrels 11 and 12 where it is coiled around barrel 11 before passing over a ramp 24 and through an opening 20 in barrel 12 wherearound the remaining cable 22, including terminal end 23, is coiled and secured. The annular space external of barrel 12 may then be lagged or covered prior to despatch of the drum to its position of use. In a modification (not shown) the barrels 11, 12, collectively may be of spiral formation with each barrel constituted by a single whorl, the opening for the passage therethrough of the cable &c. being on the radius which is common to both ends of the spiral.
