Abstract

1,157,911. Cable drums. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 9 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36059/66. Heading B8M. A drum comprising a cylindrical shell 1 and end supports 2 mounted coaxially of the drum is characterized in that the shell 1 is secured to the end supports 2 by coupling means 6 which permit of rotational movement between the ends of the shell and the end supports in the longitudinal sense when rope or cable is wound on the drum, means also being provided to prevent rotation of the end supports relative to the shell about the axis. The coupling means is preferably an elastic member 6 carried on the radially outer surface of a circumferential flange 4 on the end support 2. Each end support 2 may be provided with radial stiffening arms 3. In an alternative embodiment, the coupling means comprises a flexible annulus secured to the outer periphery of the end support. In a further embodiment the radially inner surface of the shell is provided with a tongue or tongues which mate with a corresponding groove or grooves in a ledge on the end support.
