A cable to be wound in a groove 11 of a pulley or drum has its end secured thereto by a cross-pin 24 which is fitted into radial slots 21, 22 in the respective ridges 14, 15 bordering the groove and is urged into and retained in a cable-clamping position by a radial screw 23 in one of the ridges. The cable-contacting surface of the groove is locally flattened or made slightly concave in the region where the pin 24 engages the cable, preferably to such an extent that the radially outer surface of the pin when holding the cable shall lie just below the circumference of the circular cross-section of the groove.
