Abstract

651,426. Reels. BARRETT, E. L. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5770. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1941. [Class 99(ii)] [Also in Groups XXX and XL(c)] A reel for a winch used to extend or retract a telescopic radio antenna, (see Group XL(c)), by means of a flexible member 23 capable of thrust (for example, a closely coiled helical spring) comprises two concentric cylinders 48 and 49 open at one end and riveted at the other to an annular member 47 of insulating material which is gripped between a rigid' washer 45 and a spring washer 46 both secured to one end of an operating shaft 44, thereby forming a friction coupling between the shaft and the cylinders. The cylinders 48 and 49 are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the diameter of flexible member 23 which is wound therein and has one end secured at a point 63 at the closed end of the cylinders. The free edge of the outer cylinder 49 terminates short of the free edge of cylinder 48, and the latter is curved to form an outwardly extending flange 53 to receive the flexible member 23 during operation of the device. The insulating end-wall 36 of the winch housing 11 is grooved to co-operate with the open ends of the cylinders and guide the flexible member 23 on or off the double-walled drum formed by the two cylinders.
