Abstract

794,440. Linkwork; securing drums to shafts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RUNCIMAN, R. D. June 4, 1956 [June 8, 1955], No. 16481/55. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a cord drive such as for radio tuning capacitors 4 wherein the two ends of a cord 8 carrying a tuning indicator 17 and wound round the spindle 13 of a tuning knob 14 are fixed to a cylindrical cup or drum 1 on the capacitor spindle 3, the drum 1 is frictionally secured to the spindle 3 by means of a split collet 2, Fig. 1, which is riveted to the drum and is forced to grip the spindle by a surrounding helical spring 5 which also serves to tension the cord 8. The internal diameter of the spring 5 in its natural state is slightly less than the external diameter of the collet, and the ends of the cord pass through holes in the drum and are attached under tension to the extended ends of the spring. The inner surface of the collet 2 is coated with cellulose enamel to improve its grip on the spindle. The cord 8 passes round the pulleys shown and is wound three and a half times around the spindle 13.
