Abstract

852,677. Wire package: creeling and balloon control. HIRST, D. A. Jan. 12, 1959, No. 1019/59. Clases 120(2) and 120(3). A wire package comprises a reel including a central body 24 or 72 which may be roughened to prevent slippage of windings thereon, and end flanges 26, 28 or 54 and 68 of different diameters (the smaller flange may be detachable) and wire wound on the body therebetween to present a conical exterior surface. The winding may be of uniform thickness. The outer peripheral edge 38 of flange 28 is preferably rounded to provide a good guiding surface for over-end unwinding. As shown in Fig. 7, a wire guiding disc having a rounded flange 56 for guiding the wire is rotatably mounted at 60 on the reel adjacent flange 54. The wire package may be located within a cylindrical container 62, to limit the outward throw or ballooning of the wire, a flange 68 having its peripheral edge in engagement as at 66, with the side wall.
