Abstract

799,997. Reeling wire. GEOFFROYDELORE. July 24, 1956 [March 24, 1956], No. 22894/56. Class 120(2) [Also in Group <SP>XXII]</SP> Means for unreeling wire from storage units of the type in which a reel of wire is coiled between a cylindrical drum casing and an axial post comprises a guide casing shaped to provide a pair of spaced cone portions 1, 2 each having a perforate apex 3 and a slot 4 down a generatrix of the cone, the slotted generatrices in both cones being face to face, and a pair of wall portions 5 merging with said cone portions 1, 2 to either side of each slot 4 so as to provide a continuous opening between the apical perforations 3 of the cones, each cone portion being adapted to overlie a storage unit 6, 7 coaxially therewith whereby wire may be automatically transferred from one cone portion to the other on exhaustion of a storage unit. Wire coiled in a drum 8 of the unit 6 around a central post 9 is drawn up through the cone 1, through its apex 3 over a roller 13 and under a pulley 14 to its place of use, the wire frictionally engaging and rotating a head 11 on the post 9. An extension 12 of the drums 8 may be provided to prevent the wire ballooning out. During the unreeling of the unit 6 a full unit 7 is placed under the cone 2 and the upper end of the wire therein is welded at 23 to the lower end of the wire in the unit 6. After the bottom turn of wire has been withdrawn from the unit 6 the wire automatically transfers through the passage 5 to the cone 2. The head 11 may be rotated by an electric motor or by a fan 15, Fig. 3, blowing against radial vanes 16 on the head 11. To prevent kinks forming in the wire as the drum empties, the end of the wire, before the coiling into the drum, is passed over a removable pin 22 and up a slotted sleeve 17 having a spring wall 19, the sleeve 17 being secured to the drum by hole and hook means 20, 21. The wire is then coiled in the drum, the pin 22 being removed after the first few coils have been laid. During subsequent unreeling the last part of the wire to be unreeled rises up along the slot in the sleeve 17.
