Sheet-Sheet 2 ATTO Patented May 12, 1942 UNITED STATES eATENT OFFiCE CAKE HOLDER Henry McDermott, Prospect Park, Pa., assignor to American Viscose Corporation, Wilmington, Del., a corporation of Delaware Application July 2, 1940, Serial No. 343,538
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for supporting and unwinding a yarn package or the like.
In the manufacture and finishing of various types of yarn, it is often desirable to subject the yarn to a liquid treatment while in package form. For instance, in one method of manufacture of rayon by theviscose process, the rayon is collected in a spinning box in an annular for-v mation, which is called a cake. The rayo'ncake is subjected to various liquid treatments, such as washing; desulphurizing and bleaching. Also, it is often desirable tosubject finished rayon or other yarn in package form to liquid treatment such as dyeing. After the liquid treatment the yarn is generally unwound from the package and formed into skeins or wound on bobbins or cones. The liquid treatment of the yarn package tends to disarrange and tangle the yarn which makes the unwinding operation difllcult.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved means for supporting and unwinding a yarn package or the like that has been subjected to a liquid treatment.
Other objects and advantages of the'invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a view of an embodiment of the invention applied to a winding machine.
Figure '2 is a vertical sectional viewof the embodiment of the invention in Figure 1.
Figure 3-is a view of the-embodiment of the invention in Figure -1 shown with parts broken away.
While the invention isshown and described as applied to a winding machine it is to be understood that it may be used withany other type of machine where yarn isunwound from a package.
In the drawings, reference character i indicates yarn being withdrawn from the package 2 mounted on the package supporting means generally indicated by reference character 3. The yarn is directed to the driven take-up bobbin 4 by the guide means 5 carried by the traverse rail 6. The package supporting means comprises the hollow shaft 1 on which are mounted the flange or base 9, the rotatable flange l0, and the package gripping means H. The shaft is supported on the frame member 8. The position of the flange 9 may be adjusted along the shaft by means of the clamping member l2. The rotatable flange is journaled on the shaft and is engaging means H are loops of spring steel or other resilient material fixed to the head [3 which is secured to the shaft. The position of the head may also be adjusted along the shaft. In order to reduce the tension on the yarn the rotatable flange may be rotated. The means for rotating the flange comprises the drive shaft M extending through'the'hollow shaft and having a head portion 15 which frictionally engages the member IS on the rotatable flange. The drive shaft [4 is rotated by an air motor or other means which is not shown.
In placing a yarn package on the package supporting means the rotatable flange is first removed. The yarn package, into which has been inserted 'a celluloid collar 68 or other andrawn inwardly and downwardly over the reinforcing means inside the package. The rotatable flange is then replaced on the shaft and the yarn is withdrawn from the package over its edge.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by theappended claims.
What I claim is:
1. Means for supporting and unwinding a yarn package comprising a shaft, a yarn package supporting base mounted on the shaft, a hub mounted on the shaft and spaced from the base, yarn package retaining means comprising loops of spring material attached to the hub and adapted to engage a yarn package supported on the base, and a member mounted on the shaft over the edge of which yarn may be withdrawn from a yarn package supported on the base.
2. Means forsupporting and unwinding a yarn package comprising a shaft, 9. yarn package supporting base mounted on the shaft, a hub mounted on the shaft and spaced from the base, said hub being adjustable along the shaft, yarn package retaining means comprising loops of spring material attached to the hub and adapted to engage a yarn package supported on the base; and
a member mounted on the shaft over the edge of which yarn may be withdrawn HENRY J. MCDERMOTT.
