This invention relates to means for applying a magazine wrap or transfer tail to a yarn package and relates more particularly to a novel means adapted to be employed in connection with yarn winding and twisting apparatus for applying said magazine wrap or transfer tail during winding and twisting operations.
As commonly understood in the textile art, a magazine wrap or transfer tail is a portion of the inner end of the first yarn wound on a yarn support, which is so disposed as to be positively secured during the winding of the remainder of the yarn package, yet freely available for tying directly to the outer end of the yarn on another yarn package. The purpose of providing a magazine wrap or transfer tail is to enable an uninterrupted flow of yarn to be maintained-from a depleted yarn package to a full package adjacent thereto, as in a creel or other yarn package holder on which both yarn packages are supported.
An object of this invention is tbe provision of a novel auxiliary means, cooperating with yarn winding'devices whereby yarns are wound on to yarn package supports, adapted to cause a portion of the yarn Wound thereon to wind on to said yarn package support at a point adjacent to the main windings so that said portion is readily available for use as a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved means adapted to guide a yarn on to a rotating yarn package support While the yarn package support is rotating at high speeds, as in continuous spinning processes wherein artificial filaments are spun. so that a portion of said yarn will be available for use as a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
Other objects of this invention, together with certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will appear from the following detailed description and the accompanying drawing.

Fig. l is a side elevational View of a portion of a yarn winding device including a spinning ring and traveler, a driven spindle, a yarn package support carried thereby, and the novel auxiliary means of my invention cooperating therewith for applying a magazine wrap or transfer tail to said yarn package support. and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said novel auxiliary means including a slotted gripping means and a guide means cooperating therewith for the application of said magazine wrap or transfer tail at the base of the yarn package support.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout both views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to Fig. l, a yarn 3, passing through a pigtail yarn guide 4, which may be supported in any suitable manner (not shown) and coming from any suitable source of supply, such as a metier or spinning cabinet (not shown) in which said yarn may be formed by an extrusion process, for example, is passed downwardly and is threaded through a traveler 5 mounted on a spinning ring 6. A ring holder 'I which is normally mounted on a vertically reciprocable ring rail (not shown) supports the spinning ring 6. When yarn 3 is thrown on to a rotatably driven yarn package support 8 in the usual manner, the vertically reciprocating movement of spinning ring 6 distributes the yarn windings on said yarn package support 8 to form a yarn package 9. The rotation of yarn package support 8 is effected by means of a spindle I0 which frictionally engages the interior of said yarn package support 8. Spindle Ill is provided with a Whorl II frictionally engaged by a drive belt I2, the motion of which serves to rotate spindle I0 at high speed and to cause yarn package support 8 to take up yarn 3. The action of the traveler on said vertically reciprocating spinning ring serves to impart the desired twist to the yarn being wound while the movement of the ring serves to distribute the yarn windings.
Without any guide means being provided to direct yarn 3 on to yarn package support 8 at a point on the base thereof separate from the windings forming yarn package 9 when yarn 3 is initially thrown on to yarn package support 8 as winding is commenced, no magazine wrap or transfer tail will be available and the usual yarn package 9 is formed.
In accordance with my invention, however, I provide a yarn gripping means and a novel yarn guide means cooperating therewith so that yarn 3 will be thrown on to yarn package support 8 automatically in forming yarn package 9 and a portion of said yarn 3 will wind on to yarn package support 8 separate from the main winding so as to be available as a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
In accordance with my invention, a substantiallv spiral guide I3 is fixed to a supporting bracket I4 which is suitably attached to a portion of the machine frame (not shown) so that said guide I3 is in a. fixed position relative to spindle I 0. Guide I3 encircles the spindle I0 at a point just above the base of the yarn package support 8 which is frictionally mounted thereon. Below guide I3 is provided a collar I5 fixed to and rotated by spindle Ill. Collar I5 contains a narrow slot I6 which serves to grip and retain an end of yarn 3. To provide the desired magazine wrap or transfer tail when winding is initiated, employing the novel device of my invention, yarn 3 passing through pigtail guide 4 and traveler 5 is drawn downwardly at the up-stroke of ring 6 and is pressed against the periphery of collar I5 which is, of course, rotating at high speed. During the rotation of collar I5, yarn 3 slips into slot I6 and the yarn is gripped thereby. As c01- lar I5 continues to rotate it draws yarn 3 within the outermost convolution of spiral guide I3. Upon further rotation of collar I5, the yarn eventually passes within the innermost convolution of the guide and onto the base of yarn package support 8 to form a plurality of windings I1. The number of windings I7 which yarn 3 makes about the base of yarn package support 8 is proportional to the number of convolutions comprising said spiral guide I3, a greater number of windings being applied than there are convolutions. Only two wraps are shown in the drawing for the sake of clarity.
After passing through the several convolutions of spiral I3, yarn 3 slips out at the center and now comes under the sole control of the traveler 5 and the vertically reciprocating spinning rng E. The spinning ring and the traveler now act to distribute the windings of yarn 3 on to yarn package support 8 in the usual way thus forming yarn package 9. The end of yarn 3 which is originally gripped in slot I6 during the winding of the yarn package 9 remains therein. When the yarn package support 8 is full, the end of yarn 3 is withdrawn from slot I6 as yarn package 9 is disengaged and removed from spindle IU. The yarn windings I1 at the base of yarn package support 8 serve as the desired magazine wrap or transfer tail.
To continue the operation, an empty yarn package support is placed on spindle I0, the end of yarn 3 held against the periphery of collar I5 in the manner described until gripped by slot I6 and the desired transfer tail and yarn package 9 again formed by the movement of yarn 3 through spiral guide I3.
It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description is given merely by way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device f or producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative toA said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith, and guide means cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
2. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn .package support, a. 'spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith, and stationary guide means cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package supportand to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
3. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of slotted means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith in the slot, and guide means cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
4. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of slotted means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith in the slot, and stationary guide means cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
5. In a device for producing yarn .packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of slotted means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith in the slot, and stationary guide means comprising a spiral cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
6. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a. spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of slotted means mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact therewith in the slot, and stationary guide means comprising a spiral having a plurality of convolutions cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.

In a device for producing yarn packagesy having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, o1' a slotted collar mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact with the periphery of said collar in the slot, and stationary guide .means comprising a spiral cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn winding being available for use as a transfer tail.
8. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spnning ring, of a slotted collar mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact with the periphery of said collar in the slot, and stationary guide means comprising a spiral having a plurality of convolutions cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
9. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried 85 by said spinning ring, of a slotted collar mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact with the periphery of said collar in the slot, and stationary guide means comprising a spiral having a plurality of convolutions cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to receive the yarn end gripped in the slot of said collar in the outermost convolution and to direct the yarn through the rema'ning convolutions so as to cause the gripped yarn end to encirc'e the yarn package support and to wind thereon at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transfer tail.
10. In a device for producing yarn packages having a transfer tail, the combination with means including a spindle for rotating a yarn package support, a spinning ring reciprocating relative to said spindle and a traveler carried by said spinning ring, of a slotted collar mounted on and rotating with said spindle for gripping a yarn end brought into contact with the periphery of said collar in the slot, and stationary guide means comprising a spiral having a plurality of convolutions cooperating with the yarn held by said gripping means adapted to receive the yarn end gripped in the slot cf said collar in the outermost convolution and to direct the yarn through l the remaining convolutions so as to cause the gripped yarn end to encircle the yarn package support below the lowermost traverse stroke of the spinning ring and traveler and to wind on at the base of said yarn support at a point spaced from the main body of yarn windings, said spaced yarn windings being available for use as a transi'er tail.
