Abstract

949, 770. Current control apparatus for electro-plating vats. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 28, 1962, No. 48858/62. Heading G3R. The current density in an electro-plating vat 1, supplied with D.C. from an A.C. supply 4 through a regulator 5, a transformer 6 and a rectifier 3, is maintained constant by a magnetic amplifier 7 having an input 71 from the supply 4, an output 72 to the regulator 5 and D.C. control windings 73, 74, 75 connected respectively to a D.C. constant reference voltage 9 via a potentiometer 8, to a current indicator 2a via an overcurrent indicator 10, and to the supply terminals of the vat 1. The amplifier 7 provides the algebraic sum of the ampere turns of the three control windings, those of of the winding 75 being reversed with respect to the other two and the windings being isolated electrically from each other. The regulator 5 can be a transductor arrangement or a motor driven regulator using either an A.C. split phase motor or a D.C. motor having a centre-tapped field winding. Accordingly the amplifier 7 may give a single output for the transductor arrangement or a push-pull output for the driving motor. The indicator 2a may comprise any one of the following forms:- (a) part or whole of the D.C. supply bus -bar threading the toroidal core of the amplifier 7. (b) a shunt connected in the output of rectifier 3 (c) the D.C. supply bus-bar threading a current transductor whose output is rectified and applied to the amplifier 7. The indicator 10 may comprise a current-sensitive relay arranged to provide an alarm, to trip a main supply switch or to take overriding control of the regulator 5 when this is motor-driven. The voltage source 9 is fed from the supply 4 and may include a constant voltage transformer and/or a Zener diode. The voltage/current characteristic for the vat, Fig. 1 (not shown) may be varied by adjustment of potentiometer 8 and the feed back from indicator 2a, which may be connected between the regulator 5 and transformer 6 and modified accordingly, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
