Abstract

1,178,003. Automatic voltage control. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. Feb.24, 1967 [Feb. 28, 1966], No. 8968/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H3] A magnetic amplifier or regulator is combined with a transformer to provide a regulated output voltage to a load. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 A. C. from source 1 is fed to transformer winding W1 wound in common on saturable cores 2, 3 and by transformer action to winding W2 wound as shown and coupled to load RL via full wave rectifier CR3, CR4 and low pass filter C, L. In addition to the transformer action primary windings W3A, W3B windings W1 and secondary windings W4A, W4B coupled to the load through diode CR1 operate as a transductor. Thus when a control signal E s of given magnitude is applied to control windings W3A, W3B output pulses are generated across windings W4A, W4B, Fig. 2 (not shown) which are added to the output of the full wave rectifier by means of diodes CR1, CR2. If the magnitude of the control signal E s decreases the duration of the pulses across windings W4A, W4B are of shorter duration and hence the average D.C. voltage supplied to the load decreases. The apparatus thus operates as a variable voltage supply, variation in output voltage being obtained by varying the magnitude of the control signal E s . The circuit of Fig. 1 may be modified to operate as a voltage regulated supply, Fig. 3, by developing an error voltage E e as shown and applying it to windings W3A, W3B instead of the control signal of Fig. 1. If the voltage across load R L increases the error voltage he decreases causing the duration of the pulses added to the output of the full wave rectifier CR3-CR6 to decrease and thus decrease the average voltage supplied to the load. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate how the arrangement of Fig. 1 may be applied to a three phase system.
