Abstract
948,799. Knitting machines. AMES TEXTILE CORPORATION. June 25, 1961, No. 22175/61. Heading D1C. Elongated loops of pile yarn are drawn during a stitch forming sequence and are held drawn until completion of the holding stitches when tension is released and the bight ends of the pile loops are crush cut to form an even pile. As shown, a pile fabric 10 is knitted using cylinder needles 15 and sinkers 20, alternate sinkers 20B, 20D moving inwards further than the intervening sinkers 20A, 20C. The pile yarn 25, caught in the hooks of needles 16, loops over the lower surfaces 22 of sinkers 20A and 20C and the upper noses 21 of sinkers 20B and 20C. The body yarn 30 and pile yarn 25 are drawn through stitches 12 by needles 15 and the loops engage noses 21 forming pile loops 13, which are engaged by a spring biased rotating crushing wheel 40 and severed without tensioning the yarn. Alternatively, the pile loop may be held by dial needles and may be crushed against the dial edge by a driven wheel, either the dial edge or the wheel having a sharp edge. In a further modification, Fig. 5, a star wheel 50<11>, driven in synchronism with the dial, crushes loops 13 against the edges 36 of needle slots 33<1>.
