Abstract

Light hydrocarbon oils are freed of mercaptans by treating them with an aqueous solution containing more than 20% wt. of free alkali metal hydroxide and containing free triethylene glycol, preferably in an amount of 10-95% wt., but with no added components which would form salts with the alkali metal hydroxide. The preferred alkali metal is potassium. The oil may be pretreated with an aqueous caustic alkali solution in the presence or absence of oxygen. Thus, a gasoline may be separated into a high boiling and a low-boiling fraction, the high boiling fraction being treated with fresh caustic which is then used to wash the low boiling fraction. In a modification of the above the fresh caustic is introduced into the second washing stage of the low boiling fraction, and then passed successively through the second and first washing stages of the high boiling fraction and finally to the first washing stage of the low boiling fraction. Specifications 775,015 and 879,731 are referred to.
