Abstract

<PICT:0861394/III/1> White spirit of improved odour is obtained by treating the spirit, which has previously been washed with a solution of caustic soda, with 5-20%, preferably 10-15%, by volume of a solution containing 0.1-4.0, preferably 0.1-1.0 gm. moles of copper ammonium acetate per litre. The preliminary treatment of the white spirit is preferably with 5-25% by volume of a caustic soda solution containing 2-5% by weight of caustic soda. As shown in the Figure, white spirit from hydrofiner 1 is fed to tank 2 where it is mixed with caustic soda solution, then to settling tank 3 where spent caustic soda is run off, before passing to tank 5 where the spirit is mixed with ammoniacal copper acetate; the treated spirit passes to settling tank 6 where spent acetate is run off, and then to tank 8 where it is washed with water before being removed by line 10. To prevent deterioration, the treated spirit may contain a little antioxidant, such as 2 : 6-ditert-butyl-cresol.
