Abstract
Amines (other than epihydrinamines) are liberated and extracted from an aminolysis reaction mixture containing said amines and/or their hydrohalides and an excess of ammonia by treating the reaction mixture with a 10-20% (by weight) solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in an alcohol (preferably methanol), evaporating off the excess of ammonia, filtering off the precipitated alkali metal halide and separating off and purifying the free amine in known manner. Most of the excess ammonia may alternatively be distilled off under a pressure of at least 6 kg./sq. cm. prior to the treatment with the alcoholic caustic alkali. Examples describe the isolation of (1) ethylenediamine, (2) morpholine, and (3) mono- and di-benzylamines.
