Abstract
A process for purifying lactams comprises extracting the lactam with water from a solution of the crude lactam in an organic solvent not or only slightly miscible with water, and subjecting the resulting aqueous extract to an after-treatment with an organic solvent which is not appreciably miscible with water, in a quantity sufficiently small to ensure that substantially no lactam is removed. The aqueous extraction and the after-treatment of the aqueous extract with an organic solvent are preferably carried out in a number of stages and in counter-current. The solvent used for the after-treatment of the aqueous extract is preferably the same as that used for dissolving the crude lactam, e.g. benzene, toluene. The process may be combined with other methods of purification, e.g. after - treatment with ion exchangers and surface-active adsorbents or preparation of the starting solution by extraction of a solution of more than 80 per cent of crude lactam in water. The examples describe the purification of caprolactam. Specifications 736,196, 757,406 and 762,879 are referred to.
