Abstract

Hydrocarbon oil of petroleum origin and containing mercaptans is sweetened by simultaneously contacting the oil with aqueous caustic soda solution and with elementary sulphur in the form of a sulphurized oil which has been prepared by dissolving sulphur in a portion of the oil to be treated. Instead of a specially-prepared caustic soda solution, there may be employed a spent plumbite solution (resulting from the plumbite method of refining oils) denuded of lead. The sour oil, caustic soda solution and sulphurized oil may be mixed in a vessel provided with a stirrer until a doctor-sweet product is obtained which is then separated from the aqueous phase. Alternatively, sour oil and sulphurizing oil may be continuously supplied to a mixing vessel containing the caustic soda solution, and the emulsion produced is allowed to overflow into a separating vessel where the treated oil and caustic soda solution separate, the latter being continuously returned to the mixing vessel. If desired, the treated oil from the separator may be passed to a second stage of mixing and separating. The process may be applied to the final sweetening treatment of cracked motor spirit after sulphuric acid treatment and redistillation. Specification 728,586 is referred to.
