Abstract
Hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof are freed from organic acid-reacting substances by extraction with a saturated solution of alkali hydroxide in aqueous ethylene glycol. Petroleum, benzene, toluene, xylene; chlorinated hydrocarbons such as chlorethane, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlopropane, chlorbutylene, chlorbenzene, or brombenzene; nitroethane, nitrobenzene; or amines such as aniline, quinoline or petroleum bases are treated. The alkalies used are alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, alkaline earth hydroxide, quaternary ammonium bases, alkali carbonates or bicarbonates. The preferred solvent is an aqueous ethylene glycol solution containing 25 to 75 per cent of the glycol, saturated with sodium hydroxide. Petroleum is freed from mercaptans by the process. The layers are separated and the spent alkali solution containing mercaptides may be regenerated by treating with steam or oxidizing with air and a catalyst to form disulphides which are easily separated. The liquid to be extracted may be pre-treated with tripotassium phosphate, sodium arsenite, sodium carbonate, ethanolamine, dilute sodium hydroxide or lime water. U.S.A. Specification 2,059,075 is referred to.ALSO:Hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof are freed from organic acid-reacting substances by extraction with a saturated solution of alkali hydroxide in aqueous ethylene glycol. The preferred solvent is an aqueous ethylene glycol containing 25 to 75 per cent of the glycol, saturated with sodium hydroxide. After extraction and separation, the spent alkali solution may be regenerated by treating with steam, or oxidizing with air and a catalyst. The main extraction may be preceded by an extraction with tri-potassium phosphate, sodium arsenite, sodium carbonate, ethanolamine, dilute sodium hydroxide or lime water. U.S.A. Specification 2,059,075 is referred to.
